Samuel L. Clemens
Samuel Langhorne Clemens, known by his pen name Mark Twain, was born on November 30, 1835, in Florida, Missouri, and died on April 21, 1910, in Redding, Connecticut. He is best known as a writer, humorist, and essayist, often called the "greatest humorist the United States has produced." His most celebrated works include *The Adventures of Tom Sawyer* (1876) and its sequel *Adventures of Huckleberry Finn* (1884), the latter frequently hailed as the "Great American Novel." He also wrote *A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court* (1889) and *Pudd'nhead Wilson* (1894), and co-wrote *The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today* (1873) with Charles Dudley Warner.
Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, which later inspired the settings for his most famous novels, Twain began his career as a printer's apprentice and typesetter, contributing to his brother Orion's newspaper. He later became a Mississippi River boat pilot, an experience that informed *Life on the Mississippi* (1883). After an unsuccessful stint as a miner in Nevada, he turned to journalism for the Virginia City *Territorial Enterprise*. His breakthrough came with the 1865 story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," which brought him international fame. Known for his sharp wit and satire, Twain was a sought-after speaker and friend to presidents, artists, and royalty.
Later in life, Twain became vice president of the American Anti-Imperialist League, opposing the Philippine–American War and colonialism. He published the satirical pamphlet "King Leopold's Soliloquy" (1905) condemning Belgian atrocities in the Congo. Despite earning substantial income from writing and lectures, he lost much of it through investments like the Paige Compositor, a failed mechanical typesetter. In the comics medium, his works have been adapted across several international Classics Illustrated series, with credits spanning from 1956 to 1997.
