“Buz Sawyer”

"Buz Sawyer" in Classic Adventure Strips #7 (1986, Dragon Lady Press) delivers a gripping wartime tale from the pen and pencil of Roy Crane, who both writes and draws the story. As Buz and Rosco face combat on a jeep carrier, their escape from Japanese submariners leads to a chilling discovery: a list predicting pilot deaths—just one of which names Buz. With the atomic bomb’s arrival and Japan’s surrender, his fate takes a sudden, unexpected turn. The cover, also by Roy Crane, captures the tension of the moment with his signature style.

As Buz and Rosco are at Buz's home on leave, Buz falls for Christy Jameson but gets inveigled into an engagement with Tot Winter. Buz and Rosco retrain for duty on a "jeep" carrier, get shot down, and are captured by Japanese submariners. After their escape, Buz learns that he is next on an eerily accurate list, compiled by the squadron commander, of anticipated pilot deaths. The atomic bomb, and the Japanese surrender, save his life.
