“The Ripper”

Penultimate issues don't get much more unsettling than this — the fifth chapter of Ben McCool and Ben Templesmith's Choker arrives with a cover that perfectly captures the series' brooding unease. Templesmith's art presents a lone figure bathed in deep crimson, her dark hair falling across a glowering, downcast face, framed by an eerie heart shape traced in glowing golden-red light against a gritty, weathered wall. With only one issue remaining after "The Ripper," the tension radiating from this image makes clear that McCool and Templesmith have been building toward something genuinely compelling.
