Challengers of the Unknown #32
In "One Challenger Must Die!", the Challengers of the Unknown face a terrifying transformation when Mastermind manipulates the alien D'Jann into using his "substance converter" to turn them into elemental beings—flame, cloud, wind, and flat. Written by Ed Herron and illustrated by Bob Brown, with inks and lettering by Brown and Starkman, this 1963 DC classic sees the team struggle to stay united as their powers warp their forms and their minds, even as Cosmo’s strange behavior hints at a deeper secret. The cover, also by Bob Brown, captures the moment of chaos as the Challengers confront their own fractured selves.

Mastermind convinces the alien D'Jann to let him use his "substance converter" against the Challengers, after convincing D'Jann that the Challs are criminals. Mastermind changes the Challengers into a flame-man, a cloud-man, a wind-man, and a two-dimensional man. Working together the Challengers flatten Mastermind's gang, despite Cosmo acting oddly, because he is actually D'Jann's pet J'Suna. Realizing Mastermind is the true villain, D'Jann grabs back the converter and stops the criminals. D'Jann decides Cosmo's powers are more valuable on Earth and leaves him behind when he returns home.
