There's something wonderfully self-referential about the cover of this April 1957 Harvey Comics issue — Casper is caught happily reading a comic book (a "Spooky" issue, no less!) while a startled little ghost dangles from the ceiling light above him, apparently spooked by the friendly phantom's presence. At a dime a copy, this is the kind of charming, lighthearted fun that made Casper — Paramount Pictures' famous star — such a beloved fixture of mid-century comics for young readers.
