About this Issue

Casper the Friendly Ghost #48 is a representative mid-run issue of Harvey's most commercially successful Silver Age children's title, appearing at the height of the creative formula that writer-editor Sid Jacobson and artist Warren Kremer had refined to perfection: Casper as a force for good surrounded by mischievous foils. By September 1956, the full supporting cast that would define the Harvey Comics universe for decades — Wendy, Spooky, and the Ghostly Trio in their original Fatso/Fusso/Lazo incarnations — was firmly in place and operating as an ensemble, and issues like this one demonstrated the template of interlocking backup features that Harvey would expand into multiple spin-off titles. The issue also appeared the same month that the Ghostly Trio made their animated debut in the Famous Studios short 'Fright from Wrong,' placing the comic at a historically resonant moment in the franchise's cross-media development.

History

The Harvey Comics series was written and edited by Sid Jacobson and drawn primarily by Warren Kremer, who together built out Casper's supporting world well beyond the character's original Famous Studios cartoon origins. Kremer provided the cover for this issue, as he did throughout the run. Harvey did not yet own the Casper character outright — that acquisition came in 1959 — so the mid-1956 issues exist in the period when Harvey was effectively the publishing steward of a licensed property, steadily enriching it with original characters and story concepts of their own devising.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published September 1956 by Harvey Comics as part of the original Casper the Friendly Ghost series (Vol. 1), which ran from 1952 to 1958.
  • Cover and interior art by Warren Kremer, the series' primary artist, who illustrated Casper stories for over 20 years.
  • The lead story, 'House Haunting,' features Casper enlisting Wendy's help to modernize the Ghostly Trio's haunted house — a strong example of the ensemble dynamic the series had developed.
  • Also contains 'Knights in a Daze' (Ghostly Trio), 'Old Haunt Week,' 'Lilly Rose,' and a Spooky backup titled 'Silence Is Golden.'
  • Wendy the Good Little Witch — present here with her aunts Thelma, Velma, and Zelma — had made her debut two years earlier in Casper the Friendly Ghost #20 (May 1954), created by artist Steve Muffatti.
  • Spooky the Tuff Little Ghost, Casper's derby-hat-wearing, Brooklyn-accented cousin, had debuted in Casper the Friendly Ghost #10 (June 1953), created by animator Larz Bourne.
  • The Ghostly Trio appear here under their original Harvey Comics names — Fatso, Fusso, and Lazo — before being renamed Fatso, Stretch, and Stinkie for the 1995 feature film.
  • The issue was published the same month as the Ghostly Trio's first animated appearance in the Famous Studios theatrical short 'Fright from Wrong' (November 1956 release), underscoring the parallel comic-and-cartoon development of the Harvey universe at this time.
