About this Issue

Cartoon Network Starring #2 (DC, October 1999) marks the first comic book appearance of Johnny Bravo and his core supporting cast — including Carl Chryniszzswics, Little Suzy, Pops, and Mama Bravo — making it the foundational print document for one of Cartoon Network's signature 'Cartoon Cartoons' franchises. At the time of publication, Johnny Bravo was the network's highest-rated program, so this issue captured a character at the peak of his cultural moment and gave readers their first chance to experience him in a static, panel-by-panel format. The issue also launched the recurring 'Johnny's Tips T' Live By' advice-column strip, a format that would carry forward through the entire DC run and later anthology titles. As the comic that introduced the full Johnny Bravo ensemble to print, it established the template — character collectible cards, multi-story anthology structure, and show-accurate character voices — that DC's subsequent Cartoon Network titles would follow for nearly a decade.

In "Johnny in Paradise!", Johnny tries to impress troop leader Miss Williams by volunteering to chaperone Suzy's Camper Critters Girls' Troop campout—only to find his plans upended when Carl steals the spotlight. Written by John Crane and illustrated by Anthony Williams, with inks by John Lowe, colors by Tom Ziuko, and letters by Albert DeGuzman, this 1999 issue captures the lighthearted chaos of summer camp through a mix of humor and awkward charm. The cover by Dave Schwartz and Mike DeCarlo perfectly captures the silly stakes of Johnny’s misadventure.

With no way to escape and a whole new kind of danger on the horizon, Johnny finds himself at the center of a situation far more tangled than any cartoon chase.

History

Cartoon Network Starring was DC Comics' second anthology series built around Cartoon Network properties, launching directly after the cancellation of Cartoon Network Presents and deliberately narrowing its focus to the studio's own 'Cartoon Cartoons' originals rather than the broader Hanna-Barbera library. Each issue spotlighted a single show, and Johnny Bravo's slot in issue #2 brought in talent directly from the animated series itself: writer John Crane, who wrote for the TV show, scripted the lead story 'Johnny Bigfoot,' while storyboarder Dave Schwartz penciled it and also provided the cover. The series ran for eighteen issues before being replaced by Cartoon Cartoons in 2001, which in turn gave way to Cartoon Network Block Party — a lineage that kept the Johnny Bravo comic cast in print continuously through 2009.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First comic book appearance of Johnny Bravo, published by DC Comics as part of the Cartoon Network Starring anthology series, on sale August 18, 1999 (cover-dated October 1999).
  • First comic book appearances of supporting cast members Carl Chryniszzswics, Little Suzy (Suzy), Pops, and Mama Bravo (Bunny Bravo), all debuting alongside Johnny in this single issue.
  • The issue contains multiple stories: the main adventure 'Johnny Bigfoot' (featuring Carl, Little Suzy, and Bunny Bravo), plus two installments of the new 'Johnny's Tips T' Live By' advice strip — Tip #1 featuring Carl and Tip #2 featuring Pops.
  • The lead story 'Johnny Bigfoot' was written by John Crane, a writer on the Johnny Bravo animated series, and penciled by Dave Schwartz, a storyboarder on the show — bringing authentic show-room creative talent directly to the page.
  • Dave Schwartz also provided the cover art, inked by Mike DeCarlo, depicting Johnny alongside Suzy, Bunny Bravo, Pops, and Master Hama.
  • The issue introduced collectible character trading cards as a recurring bonus feature within the Cartoon Network Starring series, with cards for Johnny, Carl, and Suzy documented from this run.
  • Cartoon Network Starring was structured so that each issue spotlighted one Cartoon Network original series, making issue #2 an all-Johnny Bravo showcase — a format distinct from the preceding Cartoon Network Presents, which mixed multiple properties per issue.
  • Johnny Bravo's comic appearances continued beyond this series through Cartoon Cartoons (2001–2004), Cartoon Network Block Party (2004–2009), and later an IDW Publishing announcement in 2013, with this issue standing as the starting point of that entire print legacy.
