“Men of Steel”

The cover by Ed Hannigan and José Marzán Jr. sets up a striking three-way confrontation: Superman lunges toward the viewer in the foreground while a flame-wreathed, wide-eyed Captain Atom recoils above him, and a massive geometric metal giant looms over them both. That title — "Men of Steel" — takes on a nicely layered meaning when you see both the Man of Steel and the quantum-powered Captain Atom dwarfed by what appears to be a towering mechanical threat. Writers Cary Bates and Greg Weisman, with art by Mike Gustovich inked by Romeo Tanghal, were clearly swinging for the fences in this October 1990 issue.
