Candy and her friend Ted go hiking, but Candy trails behind and loses Ted's prehistoric gnu bone specimen in a shrubbery. After retrieving a ham bone instead, Candy faces consequences when a museum curator and city official threaten legal action over the lost artifact, though Ted eventually forgives her mistake. In a separate story, Candy prepares for a speech contest with her friend Harlan, but they clash over practice methods before Ted fails to show up at Pete's Ice Cream parlor. A masquerade ball story follows, in which Candy attends an event where her father advises her not to be silly, and she wonders how the boys will react to her costume, while Ted may initially seem shy but is expected to come around.
