About this Issue

Cable (2024) #1 carries genuine historical weight as the fifth solo volume of Cable's publishing history and the one that reunites the character's most prolific writer, Fabian Nicieza, with his creation for the first time in years — a reunion that collectors and X-fans had waited more than a decade to see. The issue introduces the Neocracy, a brand-new antagonist faction to the Marvel Universe whose DNA-based suppression of individuality gives Nicieza room to push Cable's core time-traveler-against-extinction premise in a sharply thematic direction tied to the final chapter of the Krakoan Era. It also marks the first time in continuity that the adult Cable (Nathan Summers) and his time-displaced teenage counterpart explicitly partner up as co-protagonists in their own dedicated series — a narrative device that pays off years of dual-Cable continuity established since the younger version replaced the elder during the Extermination event. As a tie-in to the Fall of the House of X / Rise of the Powers of X crossover that closed out Jonathan Hickman's entire Krakoan Age, this issue stands as a meaningful coda to the longest, most ambitious sustained X-Men publishing initiative of the 21st century.

History

Marvel announced the series at New York Comic Con in October 2023, framing it as a four-issue limited tie-in to the climactic Fall of the House of X and Rise of the Powers of X event that would conclude the Krakoan Age. Nicieza — who had originally co-written the final three issues of New Mutants alongside Rob Liefeld in the early 1990s and then wrote Cable's earliest solo material, including the Blood and Metal miniseries and the launch of the ongoing series — was brought back specifically because of his unmatched authorial history with the character; he himself noted, 'Having written him more than anyone else on the planet, it's also fun to add to that total.' The series was edited by Jordan D. White and illustrated by Scot Eaton, with inking by Cam Smith and Victor Nava, colors by Javier Tartaglia, letters by VC's Joe Sabino, and a cover for the standard edition by X-Men veteran Whilce Portacio.
