Titled "A Beautiful Sunset," this Season Eight installment from 2008 presents a quietly unnerving cover by Jon Foster: Buffy, seen from behind in a sleeveless blue top, faces a looming, bandaged figure that towers over her amid crumbling, checkerboard-patterned ruins. The tension between her vulnerable, almost contemplative posture and the imposing threat ahead gives the image a haunting, painterly weight that stands apart from typical superhero fare. With Joss Whedon writing and Georges Jeanty on interior art, this Dark Horse series was clearly firing on all cylinders at this point in its run.
