“A Boy Named Sue”

Issue #11 of Dark Horse's Buffy the Vampire Slayer finds the Slayer herself front and center, looking steely-eyed and alert beside a bespectacled young man while a trio of snarling, grotesque demons looms over them from the shadows above. The cover art by Jeff Matsuda and Jon Sibal does a nice job of conveying that familiar Sunnydale tension — two ordinary-looking people caught squarely in the path of something anything but ordinary. With a creative team including writer Andi Watson and artist Joe Bennett handling the interiors, "A Boy Named Sue" looks like a solid chapter in Dark Horse's 1999 run with the franchise.
