Buffalo Bill travels not only with Blue Bird but with his horse Gallant, close to being healed from a gunshot wound, and two small bear cubs. Bill leaves to scout the region for Indian activity and in his absence Blue Bird and Gallant are taken by two Sioux braves. In pursuit Bill manages to shoot one of the braves, but doesn't down the other until soon thereafter. Reunited with Blue Bird they soon come across a Blackfoot camp, decimated, the only survivors an adolescent girl with an infant. Bill surmises the camp was destroyed by Scar Scanlin's gang of renegades.
