Bill and Blue Bird come across a Blackfoot Indian camp where all have died from what appears to be smallpox, all but an infant papoose that Blue Bird decides to rescue. Buffalo Bill is convinced that he and Blue Bird's lives are in danger by taking in a child with smallpox, but Blue Bird scoffs at the notion. Not far off is Sitting Bull and his men, who have just defeated General Custer at Little Big Horn. Blue Bird paints spots on her face and Bill's to make it appear as if they have the disease. Sitting Bull sees the "diseased" couple with the infant and decides to steer clear of them.
