“The Gypsy King”

In "The Gypsy King," Bugs Bunny stumbles into a Gypsy encampment during a desperate escape from Daffy Duck, inadvertently becoming the chosen king during their ceremonial selection. With rival Gypsies Zaco and Tanno furious over the turn of events and Daffy eager to claim royal status for himself, Bugs must navigate a tradition that demands the king’s ears be pierced for the Golden Earrings—something he’s determined to avoid. Written by Don R. Christensen and illustrated with energetic flair by John Carey (pencils, inks, and lettering), this 1952 Western Publishing gem features a delightfully chaotic mix of slapstick and folklore, all rendered in the signature style of the era. The cover, also by Carey, captures the absurd spectacle with bold, expressive lines.

Trying to escape the pesty and annoying Daffy, Bugs tunnels underground and comes up in a Gypsy encampment smack in the middle of the ceremony where the Gypsies select their next king. His sudden and unexpected appearance results in the rabbit being named King of the Gypsies – much to the displeasure of Gypsies Zaco and Tanno, who are bitter rivals for the crown. To complicate matters, Daffy horns-in looking for a piece of royalty for himself, and tradition dictates the Gypsy King's ears be painfully-pierced to accommodate the royal Golden Earrings - an ordeal big-eared Bugs wants no part of.
