Image Comics launched this four-issue 1996 miniseries with a cover that grabs you immediately — Simon Bisley's painted linework depicts a battered, muscular mutant turtle bursting through what appears to be an American-flag-patterned armored figure, blood spatters and all, against a dark, spike-riddled background. The raw energy of Bisley's cover art (inked by Bisley himself) sets a gritty, unapologetically violent tone that feels worlds apart from lighter takes on the turtle mythos. With Kevin Eastman writing and co-creating the interior art alongside Bisley, this is one for fans who appreciate when comics lean hard into their R-rated ambitions.
