“Keep Up the Fire”

In "Keep Up the Fire," ghost detective Sergeant Spook takes a stand for the kids of the city’s slum neighborhoods when he steps in to save a group of children from a near-miss with a car. Written by Ray Gill and illustrated by John Jordan, this 1942 issue sees Spook guide one of the boys, Jerry, in organizing a petition for a proper playground—only to uncover a corrupt scheme when the Mayor approves the project but secretly skims funds by using shoddy materials. The story builds with quiet tension as Spook ensures justice is served, all under a striking cover by Jack Warren.

When Sergeant Spook saves some young kids in a slum area from being hit by a car while they play, Mayor Griggs comes along and chastises the boys for playing in the street. The ghost detective has Jerry, one of the boys, circulate a petition to get a playground built for the kids, then has him present it at a City Council meeting. It's approved (thanks to Spook), but the Mayor orders the contractor to use sub-standard materials, yet charge the city for top-rated materials. When the playground opens, Spook forces the Mayor to reveal the scam.
