“Hostile Takeover”

DC's 2016 six-part Bloodlines series kicks off with a striking cover by V. Ken Marion and Matt Banning that sets an immediately unsettling tone — a massive, bare-chested figure crackling with electrical energy stands atop rocky ground, flanked by a young woman with clawed hands and a third figure behind them, while grotesque alien creatures swarm at their feet beneath an ominous full moon. The contrast between the vulnerable, street-clothed teens and the monstrous threats surrounding them suggests something dark and transformative is very much at the heart of this story. With J. T. Krul writing and Marion on interior art, this opening chapter of "Hostile Takeover" looks like a sharp, horror-edged take on what happens when ordinary people collide with something deeply inhuman.
