About this Issue

Blaze #10 is narratively significant as the opening chapter of a three-issue crossover with the Punisher — a pairing that placed the post-Ghost Rider Johnny Blaze squarely in Marvel's street-level action sphere rather than the collapsing Midnight Sons supernatural imprint he had emerged from. The issue introduces the entire roster of the Undead MC, a gang of vampire bikers who serve as the arc's central antagonists, making it the first appearance of six named villain characters in a single chapter. It also demonstrates how writer Larry Hama pivoted the series toward grounded horror-western storytelling centered on the Quentin Carnival milieu, a deliberate tonal shift from the sprawling crossover event structure that had defined Marvel's supernatural titles through 1994.

History

The Blaze solo series launched in August 1994 as part of Marvel's Midnight Sons imprint, giving Johnny Blaze — the original Ghost Rider, now stripped of the Spirit of Vengeance — his first-ever self-titled ongoing series. The Midnight Sons branding was dropped from remaining titles by September 1994 after the 'Siege of Darkness' crossover wound down and audience interest in the shared supernatural line faded, leaving Blaze to soldier on under the standard Marvel banner. Larry Hama wrote every issue of the series and by issue #10 had brought in Gary Erskine as the full art team, replacing the earlier Henry Martinez/Bud LaRosa lineup that had handled most of the run's first half. Bob Harras served as Editor-in-Chief over the book's entire publication window of August 1994 through July 1995.
