Black Fury, a wild stallion protecting a herd of horses, proves troublesome due to the rebellious behavior of a red stallion named Big Red who threatens the herd's safety. Indian Joe enlists Black Fury to help control Big Red by making the horse a deputy, and after Black Fury defeats Big Red in combat, the stallion is subdued and joins the herd. In a secondary story, Jim, a frontier settler, wins the big prize at a school graduation ceremony and uses the reward to bring a schoolteacher to his settlement in the wilderness, improving life for the community's children.
