In "Poison Valley," Jake McCain's horse Black Fury pushes a boy into a poisoned hot spring, prompting Jake to investigate the reason for the horse's unusual behavior. Jake learns that the boy, Johnny, has been staying at the hot springs with his father Uncle Dan, who plans to take him to Whirlpool Falls for dinner. The story resolves with Jake discovering Black Fury's protective instincts were justified, as the horse had sensed danger in the poisoned waters.
