Black Diamond clears an innocent man named Harry of murder charges by exposing the true culprit, a coyote that had been trained to attack. Black Diamond then takes on a case involving a centaur, and he and his sidekick Bumper pursue the creature across the desert landscape while uncovering a plot by criminals who have been using the centaur rumors to cover their own schemes. As the two men set their trap on the grazing herd, they discover the "centaur" is actually a man on horseback, leading to a confrontation in which Black Diamond defeats the criminals and stampedes the herd to escape.

Black Diamond arrives in the mining town of Diggersville to find the community gripped by fear—miners have been murdered and robbed on the trail to Dry Gulch, and the townspeople are convinced that Coyote Charlie, a solitary man known for his tamed pet coyote, is the culprit. When an enraged mob moves to lynch Charlie without trial, Black Diamond steps in to protect him and launches his own investigation into the real killer's identity. As Black Diamond and Charlie search for evidence in the treacherous mountain country, the town's suspicions only grow darker.
