Vol. 8 collects the eighth issue of the influential anthology series, showcasing a mix of underground comix and alternative cartoonists. This volume features work by creators including Spain Rodriguez and stories involving characters like Jimmy Corrigan, Nancy, and Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks, reflecting the eclectic, often surreal tone of the series. Published by Kitchen Sink Press in 1995, this edition continues the tradition of blending satire, autobiography, and experimental storytelling.
In "Somewhere Over the Rainbow...", Chris Ware crafts a quiet, poignant tale of isolation and imagination, following Jimmy, a man stranded on a remote island who finds solace in a handmade toy mouse and the fragile rituals of survival. When a storm threatens his fragile existence, and a fierce bird attacks, his desperate struggle leads to an unexpected rescue by a mysterious group of "Super-men" — and then, a surreal encounter with the legendary figure himself. With every line drawn, inked, colored, and lettered by Ware himself, this issue stands as a singular, deeply personal work from one of comics’ most distinctive voices.

Jimmy, stranded on an island, spends much of his time fishing and talking to a toy mouse he created from twigs and torn cloth. He struggles with a storm while in a boat, gets attacked by a large bird of prey and gets stuck in his cave. He is then rescued by a pack of "Super-men" and then eventually again meets Super-man himself.
