Billy West and his companions discover a map burned into wood that points to lost gold, leading them to seek help from the Sundog Sheriff in the town of Almacante to retrieve it. When the sheriff proves unreliable, they must fight off Morgau's gang and the villain himself to protect their discovery. In a separate story, "Gunshy Johnny," young Johnny Doyle arrives in the West and attempts to prove himself by winning a shooting contest against experienced cowboys, competing in a target match where he must hit playing cards fastened to a tree.
