Charlton's Billy the Kid #54 puts the young gunfighter William Bonney right in the thick of a desperate, smoky brawl — cover artist Rocco "Rocke" Mastroserio depicts him crouching amid flames and debris, pistol in hand, while two menacing hat-wearing figures close in from either side as the shout "Bonney's still alive! Get 'im!" hangs in the air. A broken sign bearing the legend "$100,000 in Gold!" makes it clear the stakes are dangerously high. With a 12-cent cover price and a story from the reliable Charlton team of writer Joe Gill and artist Charles Nicholas, this 1966 issue delivers the kind of fast-paced Western action the series did so well.
