“Scheme Theme”

In the Home Economics classroom, Betty and Archie share a very close moment over a pan of pot roast — apparently too close, because a cross-armed Veronica looks on from the doorway with sharp suspicion while a startled onlooker wonders aloud what Archie is "cooking with Betty." Dan DeCarlo's cover art perfectly captures the playful romantic tension that made this series such a delight, with the chalkboard's recipe assignments adding a wonderfully mundane backdrop to the drama unfolding in front of it. A charming slice of Riverdale life from 1986 that sets up "Scheme Theme" with a knowing wink.
