The story sends the Dark Knight to the Scottish Highlands, where he investigates a series of mysterious deaths linked to an ancient curse and a secret society, blending gothic atmosphere with detective work. Written by Alan Grant with art by Frank Quitely, it's a standalone Batman adventure that showcases Quitely's early work for DC.
In "Chapter One: Isle of Mists," Batman follows a cryptic trail from shattered tombstones to the mist-shrouded halls of Rosslyn Chapel, where legend speaks of a buried treasure. As danger closes in and a hit squad targets Bruce Wayne, the Dark Knight must unravel a mystery steeped in Scottish history and hidden secrets. Written by Alan Grant and brought to life with striking art by Frank Quitely—pencils and inks—and vivid colors by Matt Hollingsworth and Brad Matthew, this 1998 issue offers a moody, atmospheric dive into a lesser-known corner of the Batman mythos, with Quitely’s cover capturing the eerie grandeur of the story’s setting.
In *Chapter One: Isle of Mists*, Bruce Wayne travels to Scotland to visit the grave of a distant relative, only to find himself targeted by a ruthless gang hired to kill him. As he investigates, he’s drawn to Rosslyn Chapel, rumored to hide a long-lost treasure, where he intercepts the assailants—now working with the sinister Plague Man. With the threat of a deadly, homemade plague looming, Batman must unravel a deadly conspiracy tied to Bruce’s own ancestral past.
In "Chapter Two: The Templar Mystery," Batman’s investigation into a series of shattered tombstones draws dangerous attention, leading to an assassination attempt on Bruce Wayne. Forced to go on the run, he seeks answers at Rosslyn Chapel, where whispers of a buried treasure have long echoed through legend.
In "Chapter Three: The Plague Man," Batman tracks down the same thugs who tried to kill him to a secluded chapel, only to find them confronted by a cloaked figure in a plague mask. The man guards a mysterious tablet, and as Batman closes in, the encounter turns into a tense standoff with no clear victory in sight.
In "Chapter Four: The Devil's Scroll," Batman uncovers a chilling connection between the Plague Man and an ancient clan—Bruce Wayne’s own bloodline—now targeted for annihilation using a terrifying, man-made plague. As the stakes rise, Bruce must confront a legacy of secrets buried deep within his family’s past.
In "Chapter Five: Castle of Doom," Bruce Wayne travels to Scotland to visit the grave of a distant relative, only to find himself targeted by a gang of thugs hired to kill him. When the attack leads him to Rosslyn Chapel—rumored to hide a long-buried treasure—Batman intercepts the same assailants as they meet up with Plague Man, who has a deadly vendetta against a family tied to Bruce’s lineage and plans to unleash a homemade plague to wipe them out.
