Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #145

That unsettling cover — a gaunt, wild-eyed face submerged to the chin in a bubbling, molten pit, streaked with what looks like blood or chemical burns — makes an immediate, visceral case for why "The Demon Laughs" has been one of 2001's more gripping Batman arcs. John Cebollero's cover art (both pencils and inks) zeroes in on this tormented figure emerging from the depths, with the tagline "A Dip… in the Pit!" doing plenty of ominous work on its own.
