Batman: Gotham Knights #19

The stark, disquieting cover by Brian Bolland says everything without showing a single costumed figure — a man in street clothes writhes on a tiled floor, screaming in apparent terror, while Batman's enormous shadow looms over him from above. That contrast between an ordinary person and the overwhelming presence of the Dark Knight gives the image a genuinely unsettling psychological charge, perfectly suited to a story titled "The Factor of Fear!" Written by Chuck Dixon with art by Dick Giordano, this September 2001 issue of Batman: Gotham Knights also features a bonus Black & White story by Mark Schultz and Claudio Castellini, making it a particularly full read.
