“Chapter Four: Cave Dwellers”

This fourth chapter of the Batgirl: Year One miniseries delivers one of 2003's most quietly striking covers, courtesy of penciller Marcos Martín and inker Álvaro López. A massive two-toned coin — stamped "Liberty," "In God We Trust," and dated 1947 — dominates the frame, its shadowed face unmistakably suggesting Two-Face, while a tiny, determined Batgirl stands silhouetted at the very bottom, dwarfed by the looming threat above her. The stark contrast between that lone figure and the giant coin captures the series' central tension beautifully: a young hero measuring herself against dangers far larger than herself.
