That single word — "Defeated…" — hangs over this January 2001 issue like a threat, and the cover by Damion Scott and Robert Campanella delivers the tension in full. Batman looms in the foreground, cowl battered and expression grim, while behind him a shadowy scene plays out against a blood-red brick wall: a gun-wielding silhouette confronting a figure — Batgirl — slammed back and airborne. Puckett, Scott, and Campanella were clearly firing on all cylinders with this moody, high-stakes chapter of their run.
