In 1985, AIDS activist Miguel Cruz is saved at a protest by Barbalien, who sheds his identity of police officer Mark Markz to do so. Later, the alien assumes a different face and follows Miguel to a gay bar, for reasons he is only beginning to understand. On Mars, the Emperor's son Boa Boaz declares his intention to travel to Earth and capture the traitorous Mark Markz.
