“I Sing of Arms and Heroes...”

Iron Man crashes through a shattered wall with fists forward on this mid-November 1989 cover by John Byrne — and the tagline says it all: "Guess who's back… and guess who aren't too sure they're happy about it." Framed in pink portrait boxes below are the worried faces of the assembled West Coast Avengers roster, including the Scarlet Witch, the Vision, Hawkeye, Mockingbird, Wonder Man, and a fiery Human Torch, none of them looking particularly thrilled by the armored arrival. It's a wonderfully tense team-dynamics setup that makes "I Sing of Arms and Heroes…" an intriguing chapter in this corner of the Marvel Universe.
