“From Out of the Smog!”

From Atlas Comics' 1955 anthology comes Astonishing #42, promising "All Brand-New Astonishing Tales" including the featured story "They Vanish at Night!" and "The Man Who Was Magic!" Carl Burgos' cover pulls you right in with an eerie green-tinted figure in a hat and trench coat — faceless and unsettling — striding through what appears to be a subway or bus station while alarmed bystanders, including a woman recoiling in fear and a man reading a newspaper, react with genuine terror. It's a wonderfully atmospheric snapshot of mid-1950s mystery-anthology storytelling, with interior work by writer Carl Wessler and artist Ross Andru with Mike Esposito on inks.
