Army@Love #6
Vertigo's sharp satirical series Army@Love hits issue #6 with a cover by Rick Veitch and Gary Erskine that perfectly captures the series' off-kilter tone: a grinning female soldier in a combat helmet and "Motivation Hot Zone Morale" patch cheerfully browses what appears to be a military supply store, casually holding a bottle of "Polka Cola" while a shopping cart overflows with more of the same — all while soldiers and smoke are visible through the window behind her. It's a wonderfully absurd collision of consumer culture and warfare that Variety called "full of the kind of wild ideas that comics used to do all the time" (Grade: A–). If you haven't yet discovered this Veitch-and-Erskine collaboration, this 2007 issue titled "Love in the Age of Information" is a fine place to see what the fuss is about.
