About this Issue

Archie's Pal Jughead Comics #89 (February 1997) is the first appearance of Trula Twyst, one of the most distinctive new characters to enter the Archie universe in the 1990s. Where decades of 'girl-hating Jughead' stories had portrayed his anti-romance stance as a fixed comedic given, Trula — a psychology-obsessed student who weaponizes behavioral science against him — gave the title a genuine intellectual antagonist capable of actually rattling Jughead's composure in ways that even Reggie Mantle could not. The three-part story that kicks off here, 'Target: Jughead,' functions on two levels: as broad Archie comedy and, as at least one critic has observed, as a surprisingly sharp parable about irrational social fear and the mechanics of mob-style pressure. Trula's longevity across digest reprints, the Archie Horror line, and live-action television adaptation attests to how effectively this single issue planted a recurring presence in Riverdale's supporting cast.

History

The issue was written by Craig Boldman, the prolific Archie staff writer who helmed much of the Jughead title's mid-period voice, with interior art by Rex W. Lindsey and coloring by Barry Grossman; Victor Gorelick served as both editor and co-writer on the issue's additional stories. The lead story, 'Target: Jughead,' was conceived as a three-part arc running through issues #89–91, an unusually structured multi-part serial for the otherwise self-contained Archie humor format of the era. The series was at this point four years into its re-branded run as Archie's Pal Jughead Comics — a title it had carried since issue #46 in June 1993 — so the introduction of a recurring new antagonist represented a deliberate effort to give the solo title a narrative hook that the ensemble Archie books were not providing.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Trula Twyst, a Riverdale High student who uses behavioral psychology to manipulate Jughead Jones — confirmed as the character's debut across the Grand Comics Database, Archie Comics' own official press materials, Wikipedia, and multiple trade sources.
  • First appearance of J.U.S.T. (Jughead Under Surveillance Team), the girl-led organization Trula founds with the stated goal of breaking Jughead's anti-romance habits and his preference for food, sleep, and television over girls.
  • Written by Craig Boldman with art by Rex W. Lindsey; Barry Grossman on colors and Bill Yoshida on lettering; Victor Gorelick served as editor (and co-writer on backup stories).
  • Published February 15, 1997, by Archie Comic Publications under the 'Archie's Pal Jughead Comics' banner — the second volume of the Jughead solo series, which had relaunched with a new #1 in August 1987 and was renamed with issue #46 in June 1993.
  • The Trula Twyst introduction is a three-part story ('Target: Jughead') that continues directly into issues #90 and #91, an unusually serialized structure for the Archie humor format of the period.
  • The issue also contains a backup story featuring Jellybean Jones (Jughead's baby sister, a character introduced in issue #50 of the same volume) and a holiday-themed backup involving Santa Claus in a cameo, plus a fan-art page.
  • The Santa Claus backup story from this issue was later reprinted in Archie Showcase Digest #14 — 'Archie & Friends Christmas in July' (September 2023) — confirming its continued editorial life in digest collections.
  • Trula Twyst was later adapted for live-action television: the character appeared in The CW's Katy Keene (2020), portrayed by Emily Rafala, and was revisited in Archie's 'Chilling Adventures Presents… Truth or Dare' (2024), a horror one-shot by writer Ron Robbins and artist Laura Braga.
