“Matchmaker”

The scene on this December 1970 cover says it all: a flustered teacher points toward a very cracked classroom wall while a rotund Mr. Weatherbee strides in with a knowing look — his speech bubble landing the punchline perfectly before he's even seen the damage. Down front, Betty, Archie, and Jughead react with the kind of wide-eyed, hands-thrown-up horror that makes Archie comics so endlessly entertaining. Joe Edwards delivers a wonderfully timed visual gag here, and at 15 cents it was a cheerful December treat for any fan of Riverdale's finest.
