“A Ring Dinger”

The cover of Archie and Me #36 sets up a wonderfully chaotic school scene — Archie and Jughead, dressed in swim trunks and beach gear (complete with an inflatable pink seahorse and a tire), have apparently caused Mr. Weatherbee to faint flat on the floor while a nurse attends to him and a horrified woman looks on. The speech bubble says it all: "All we did was ask Mr. Weatherbee if we could have the day off!" — a punchline that perfectly captures the lighthearted humor this series delivered so reliably in 1970. Dan DeCarlo's cover pencils bring the Riverdale gang to life with that effortlessly expressive style that made these comics such a delight.
