“Beware the Beasts of Neverwere!”

In "Beware the Beasts of Neverwere!", Arak stands at the center of a clash between myth and loyalty as ancient, legendary creatures from Barmak’s bestiary are unleashed upon the Caliph. With Valda and Malagigi defending the ruler and Alsind and Satyricus driving the beasts forward, the line between protector and predator blurs. Written by Roy and Dann Thomas and illustrated with striking detail by Tony DeZuniga—whose cover pencils and inks capture the tension in full—this 1984 issue delivers a pulse-pounding stand-off that ends with a shocking twist: Sharizad’s allegiance, and the basilisk’s arrival, leave the fate of Barmak—and everyone else—hanging in the balance.

Alsind and Satyricus enlist the aid of a number of supposedly-mythological beasts from Barmak's bestiary to kill the Caliph. However, they find themselves in opposition to Arak, Valda, and Malagigi, who feel duty-bound to protect the ruler. At the end, the various beasts are dead and it looks like Arak will have to fight an enraged Alsind, but Sharizad announces she has joined the Caliph's harem and asks, piercingly, if Alsind will kill her, too. Defeated, Alsind drops his weapons and they all begin searching for the villainous Barmak. But, the basilisk found him first...
