Annihilation: Heralds of Galactus #1
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeAnnihilation: Heralds of Galactus #1 serves as the direct narrative epilogue to the landmark 2006–2007 Annihilation crossover event, tying off the fates of two major cosmic characters whose arcs were left deliberately unresolved in the main miniseries. The Stardust story is especially significant: it canonizes that the entity born as Lambda-Zero is a member of the Ethereal race, immortal through the Power Cosmic, and capable of reconstituting itself after apparent death — lore that deepens Galactus's herald mythology in ways that reverberate through later cosmic storytelling. The issue also delivers the death of the Silver Age villain Space Parasite (Randau) in an encounter that reframes Terrax's post-war psychological state, grounding a previously one-dimensional cosmic brute in questions of shame, willpower, and honor. Together its two anthology stories demonstrate how the Annihilation era used peripheral one-shots to expand the emotional and cosmological texture of Marvel's outer-space continuity.

The issue was released on February 28, 2007, as the first of a two-issue limited series that capped the Annihilation publishing program, which had run from a 48-page prologue in March 2006 through a six-issue central miniseries ending in early 2007. It was written by two separate writers — Christos Gage handling the Terrax-led 'Parasites' story with pencils by Giuseppe Camuncoli, and Stuart Moore writing the Stardust-focused 'A Death of Hope' segment with art by Mike McKone — with a painted cover by Gabriele Dell'Otto, who had provided covers throughout the Annihilation line and whose work gave the event much of its visual identity. The series editor throughout Annihilation was Andy Schmidt, with Joe Quesada serving as Editor-in-Chief.
Trivia · 8 facts
- Released February 28, 2007 (cover-dated April 2007); first of a two-issue limited series serving as the epilogue to the Annihilation crossover event.
- Contains two distinct anthology stories: 'Parasites,' written by Christos Gage with art by Giuseppe Camuncoli, and 'A Death of Hope,' written by Stuart Moore with art by Mike McKone.
- Cover art by Gabriele Dell'Otto, the painter who provided covers across the entire Annihilation event line.
- The Stardust story reveals that Stardust's pre-herald identity is Lambda-Zero, a member of the Ethereal race — beings of pure energy — and that the Power Cosmic renders Lambda-Zero effectively immortal, able to reconstitute after destruction.
- Stardust's story resolves her post-war status: after absorbing the sentient remains of the last 53 surviving Ethereals and offering them to a weakened Galactus — an act Galactus notes no herald had ever performed — she is named his second active herald alongside the Silver Surfer.
- The Terrax story depicts his death of Space Parasite (Randau), a Silver Age Hulk villain first appearing in Incredible Hulk #103 (1968), making this issue the character's final appearance and on-panel death.
- Several locations debut in the Terrax story: the planet New Xeron, Randau City, and the Palace of Randau all receive first (and only) appearances before being destroyed.
- The Marvel Database records four reprints of this issue, including its appearance in the Annihilation: Chronicles collection.
