“Wildside”

Brian Bolland's cover for this April 1993 Vertigo issue pulls you straight into a tense urban tableau — a pale, blank-faced young woman dominates the foreground while two uniformed police officers loom behind her, flanking a backdrop of neon-lit strip-club signage and watchful women in the shadows. The unsettling mood is sharpened by a screaming redhead at the lower left, the whole composition radiating a seedy, street-level unease that suits the series' mature sensibility perfectly. Writer Jamie Delano and artist Steve Pugh continue their run on Animal Man here, delivering what the cover promises: a story called "Wildside" that clearly ventures into some uncomfortable territory.
