American Vampire #1
This volume collects the first five issues of the acclaimed horror series, introducing readers to the Old West outlaw Skinner Sweet, who becomes the first of a new breed of vampire, and Pearl Jones, a struggling 1920s actress who crosses paths with him. Written by Scott Snyder with a backup story by Stephen King, the book explores a uniquely American take on vampire mythology across different eras.
"Big Break" kicks off a chilling chapter in the American Vampire saga, with Stephen King and Rafael Albuquerque crafting a tense, character-driven story where the past refuses to stay buried. Three years after a brutal clash with Skinner Sweet, James Book fights to hold on to his humanity, while Abilena faces a heartbreaking choice—and makes a request that carries weight far beyond the moment. The haunting atmosphere and emotional stakes are brought to life by Albuquerque’s striking visuals and McCaig’s evocative colors, all framed by a cover by Albuquerque that captures the story’s eerie gravity.
In "Morning Star," Pearl Jones wakes in the desert with no memory of how she got there, her body broken and her mind unraveling. Found near death by her friends and taken in by the enigmatic Skinner Sweet, she slowly realizes she’s no longer human—her thirst, her strength, her new world all pointing to a terrifying transformation.
In "Deep Water," Will Bunting weaves a haunting tale of lingering grief and supernatural waiting, as celebrated Pinkerton agent James Book rides the American West in sorrow, haunted by the loss of his beloved—while the vampire Skinner Sweet remains trapped in his grave, enduring the long passage of time.
In "Blood Vengeance," Skinner Sweet, the outlaw-turned-vampire, returns to Lakeview, Colorado, to settle old scores, igniting a brutal vendetta that leads him to the Bakersfield Mines for a final reckoning with his long-time enemy, James Book. As the new breed of vampire threatens Bram Percy, he turns to Skinner’s former gang—now fractured and wary—for one last mission.
In "One Drop of Blood," Will Bunting delivers a chilling chapter in the saga of Skinner Sweet, as James Book and his posse close in on the undead outlaw at the Bakersfield Mines. What begins as a hunt for justice quickly turns into a deadly game, as Sweet’s former gang lies in wait—and unseen watchers from beyond the grave are already choosing their side.
In "If Thy Right Hand Offend Thee...", James Book grapples with the lingering curse of vampirism three years after his battle with Skinner Sweet, while Abilena faces a heart-wrenching decision. As Will Bunting concludes his tale, Skinner Sweet breaks free from his prison, turning his gaze toward the vampire who orchestrated the chaos.
