“The Origin of the Shining Knight”

This October 1986 issue spotlights the Shining Knight front and center, rendered by Tony DeZuniga, as the armored hero soars above a city skyline astride a magnificent winged white horse, sword raised high and shield at the ready. Looming in the sky behind him is a ghostly, larger-than-life face — a striking visual hint at the legendary past that shaped this golden-age champion. Roy Thomas and Tony DeZuniga deliver what promises to be a rich, mythically charged tale for any fan of DC's wartime heroes.

The Shining Knight is sent by King Arthur to battle the ogre Blunderbore. While travelling to where Blunderbore lives, the Shining Knight frees Merlin, who gives him new armor, sword and a flying horse to use to battle evil. After defeating Blunderbore, Merlin is frozen in ice and is not awakened until the 1940's off the coast of New England.
