“The Keeper of the Monsters”

All Select Comics #3 brings together three of Timely's biggest wartime heroes — Human Torch, Captain America, and Sub-Mariner — in a single 1944 package that was genuinely hard to beat for a dime. Alex Schomburg's cover captures the trio in full combat at what appears to be an enemy torpedo plant, with Captain America swinging in on a rope shield-first, the Human Torch unleashing a torrent of flame, and the bare-chested Sub-Mariner trading blows amid a crowd of enemy soldiers. It's a gloriously busy battle scene that perfectly embodies the patriotic energy Timely brought to its wartime line.
