“The Whole Town Talked”

In "The Whole Town Talked," tennis player Leta finds herself married to the charming but distant Jonathan, whose real motive was to mentor her without scandal. As their marriage remains cold and unfulfilled, Leta grapples with loneliness and betrayal—especially when her ex, Speed, shows interest only in her money. After a devastating injury ends her career, Jonathan finally reveals his true feelings, leaving Leta to confront the emotional cost of their arrangement. The story, illustrated with quiet intensity by Kenneth Rice, unfolds with poignant realism, and the cover by Alice Kirkpatrick captures its bittersweet tone.

Playboy tennis buff Jonathan marries young tennis player Leta so he can train her and manage her career without arousing gossip. They are married in name only, and Leta is left alone on her wedding night, even though she loves Jonathan. Leta offers her ex-boyfriend Speed her friendship, then learns he is only interested in getting money from her. Leta is badly injured in a fall and will probably never play tennis again. Jonathan says he’s always loved her and tennis was only a pretext.
