Age of X-Man: Nextgen #5

The final issue of Age of X-Man: Nextgen closes out with a cover by Chris Bachalo and Tim Townsend that feels quietly mournful — a large gathering of young mutants in gold-and-black uniforms crowds an open field, some seated, some standing, while chickens wander the foreground in an oddly grounded, pastoral touch. At the center, two pale-haired figures sit close together over what appears to be a small memorial, the whole scene suggesting a generation of mutants pausing to reckon with something larger than themselves. Ed Brisson's writing and Lucas Werneck's interior art bring this "Age of X-Man" tie-in to its conclusion, making this a satisfying wrap-up to one of 2019's more thoughtful corners of the X-Men universe.
