“Ending Battle, Part 2: Dawn's Early Light”

Part 2 of the eight-part "Ending Battle" crossover arrives in Adventures of Superman #608, and Kevin Nowlan's cover sets an urgent, unsettling tone — Superman strains forward against what appears to be a large mechanical device while a looming, glowing skull dominates the background and two monstrous, zombie-like figures close in from the left. Joe Casey scripts and Derec Aucoin illustrates the interior as the story subtitle promises — "The Achilles Agenda!" — suggesting the Man of Steel is being tested at his most vulnerable. This is a satisfying chapter in a sprawling 2002 crossover that clearly isn't pulling its punches.

Superman has to stop a rash of two-bit villains from killing everyday people connected to Clark Kent, but when he stops King Shark from offing Jimmy Olsen, Superman learns that the villains are being directed by a voice in their heads. This revelation is interrupted by news that smoke is pouring out of the Daily Planet building.
