“Troubled Waters”

The depths look anything but friendly in this February 1996 issue of The Adventures of Superman, where the cover by Stuart Immonen and José Marzán Jr. plunges Superman into an underwater struggle against a massive, tentacled creature. Lori Lemaris — the cover boldly announces her return — reaches desperately toward the Man of Steel as both are ensnared by the beast's enormous coils, blue energy crackling between them against a murky green abyss. Kesel, Immonen, and Marzán Jr. deliver a cover that captures real urgency, making "Troubled Waters" feel like exactly the right title for whatever lies within.
