An underground civilization beneath Earth's surface captures a mountain climber named Gil, who was presumed dead 30 years earlier after collapsing near Mount Everest. When surface dwellers learn of the subterranean society's existence, they demand the civilization reveal itself, but the underground leaders refuse out of fear their knowledge might spark wars on the surface. Gil must choose between loyalty to his new life below or helping those he left behind above ground. When a volcano erupts and threatens the underground city, the civilization's fate hangs in the balance as molten lava bears down on its people and structures.
