# The World That Was! A man witnesses inexplicable celestial phenomena—the sun racing across the sky at terrifying speed, causing rapid aging and environmental chaos—before discovering he has become unstuck in time. Transformed into an aquatic creature and abandoned in a desolate landscape, he experiences a reversal of his aging before encountering a crashed spaceship. In his final moments, he recognizes the vessel belongs to Manuel and Chico, learning too late that the catastrophic events were caused by their spacecraft's malfunction, condemning him and countless others to death as punishment for his greed in their past encounter.

In 1955, a simple man named Simon stumbles upon a lost wallet in the small town of Miller's Gap, Kansas, and tries to return it—only to be falsely accused of theft by suspicious townspeople who chase him into the night. Meanwhile, far across the cosmos, the alien Thorik and a companion use their atomic telescope to observe Earth for the first time, searching for a new world to colonize, and decide to capture a human specimen to determine whether Earth's inhabitants are worthy of mercy or destruction. As Simon's faith in human kindness crumbles and distant eyes turn toward our world, Kenneth Landau's "The World That Was!" asks what kind of planet we've truly become.
